An interesting one again today - it is worth noting that the black queen is completely trapped, so white already has a significant advantage.
As several posters have pointed out, black does not play the best response to the rook incursion, and must turn it down to survive. There are a couple options to choose from, but Ke8 (or Ng4) looks to be the best. Ng8 leads to mate for white. Here are some lines...
He also wrote at the end that it came out 10 points better according to his pc. It looks like 8 to me.
a fairytale position
nice! and done!
Truly a case of ... a poisoned Rook. I am pretty well convinced that Ke8 is black's best response. I have no doubt that white will gain a considerable material advantage. However, white is (at this point) dependent on his two knights as protection against mate in one or two by the black queen. White must exercise caution. I "played" a variation in which I somewhere blundered and allowed black to break up my protective Knight barrier:
(But as I continued, white won anyway - I think it is hopeless for black)
1. Rxg7 Ke8 2. Qxh6 Kd7 (Here I think I should have played 3. Rxf7), but I moved: 3. Bxf6 Bxf6 (Okay, NOW 4. Rxf7+ ), but I moved: 4. Qxf6? Ne5! 5. fxe6+ Kc6 (Now White bites into a poisoned rook) 6. Qxd8 Bxe6 7. Qxa8 Bxb2 So now black threatens a quick mate starting with QC!+. White must move to defend 8. Qc8+ Kb6 9. Qf5 Be6 10. Qf2+ Kc6 11. Nd5 Bxd5 12. exd5 Kxd5 13. c4+ Nxc4 13. ... Kc6 14 Qxb2 1-0 14. Bxc4+ Kxc4 15. Qxb2 1-0
sure it is.
1. Kg8 ... any move2. gxf8=Q# or =R#
This would be good for a Sunday or Monday puzzle, though many prefer more realistic boards.
I just saw this game recently
black loses sooner rather than later
