why doesn't the queen just take the rook? is she retarded?
Nice queen sacrifice!
The Queen is pinning down the pawn on g3 in the starting position. If the Queen captures the rook when it goes to the corner, that pawn pushes up to g4 and it's checkmate. The only move that delays mate is the queen check on c8. The black pawn push to f5 prevents the g4 mate, so that's why the rook heads back to the corner.
