What's wrong with using smothered mate in 5? So it takes one move longer, so what? How is that incorrect? Someone explain that to me, I think it's absurd.

Because it says mate in 4 not just mate in general. It's not wrong in a real game it's just not following directions

I was blindsided. I was so into the smothered mate pattern that I failed to consider any alternatives.

I think that was the point of this puzzle. To look at all combinations

I thought it would be smothered mate.

Yes, so did I at first; however, smother mate would have taken 5 moves.

    4 moves instead of 5.

Even though I saw both...I'd take the extra move for a smother mate in a real game. Even if I had .5 seconds on the clock. I play chess to have fun. Smother mates are fun =P.

The puzzle would have been better with the rook on C8, after NC7+, RXN is met with QD8+ followed by mate or KB8; NA6+ double check, RA8, QB8+, RXQ and NC7++

    KNc7+, Kb8

    Na6+, Ka8

    Qb8+, RXb8

    Nc8#
