K to f7:  the knight moves with check. The white knight captures but now the black bishop  can move out and help defend the king. Before that the bishop could not move to b8 b/o Knxb6#

1. K to F7 wins the game. If the knight doesn't move, its taken by the king then next move for white is KC7 for checkmate. Why move the king all around the board chasing a pawn that will never queen?

i agree with you

Kf7 wins only a N.  The pawn chase results in a mate as long as K can not be checked by N on way to pawn

Read the comments of other posters. The QUICKEST mate is the one proposed by the puzzle. Eliminating the pawn creates zugzwang; chasing the knight around does eventually result in mate, but from what I can tell, it's mate in 12 or 13 or something. This is because Kf7 is followed by Nd6+. Knight takes knight, but then the black pawn and bishop can move and the mating position is lost. Someone kindly posted a diagram, which is slightly flawed in terms of white's moves but covers these basic principles quite well.

Woah I see...no wonder the king had to move so far away to one side of the board...

The thing is, why can't the black bishop move to its only square left? It prevents the knight from mating, and suddenly it could be a winning position for black.

I mean...this is my first time seeing the zugswang, so I'm not sure. Therefore, do correct me wherever I am wrong at.

Basically white's goal is to force black into moving either the knight or the bishop.

If that happens without putting white in check, then white's next move, checkmate!  So by doing the crazy around the board stuff with the white king, black is forced to move the pawn, or be mated on the next move.  Which he does until he runs out of board.  The white king keeps himself placed so as not to be checked, nor lose touch with the pawn.  Once the pawn is gone, black's next legal move, opens the way for the mating move from white.

1. ????  Bb8

2. Nxb6 Mate

or

1. ????  Nd6 (or Ne7 or anywhere else)

2. Nc7 Mate

BTW, I didn't see it either, I was all for Kf7.  After a long game what is another 6 moves among friends. Embarassed
