the fourth move is debateable but it's a good checkmate.

I was thinking the same thing. And does anyone know why 4.a4 is wrong please? I don't see how both mate threats (b4/Bd2) can be defended.

Probably a bad puzzle. Once there was another puzzle with checkmate along a diagonal and it wouldn't work if you sac the queen for checkmate (which it definitely was on the e8-h5 diagonal) but it worked is you sacced the bishop. a4 should do the same job as b3 in my opinion.

4.a4 is met by 4...Ba2.   Then both 5.b4+ and 5.Bd2+ can be met by 5...Kxa4 and it's no longer Mate in 5 as specified.

Could be wrong here, but from what I can tell black can then drop the bishop in front of the rook, delaying checkmate by an extra move. So A4 isn't quite as good.

(Please correct me if I'm wrong)

Edit: Beaten to it by marmaladecat :)

Pawn on a2 takes Ba3,same situation for black,K is still in check with Ra1,still mate.

Tough puzzle today, there are lots of candidate moves to calculate.  I wasn't able to solve this one!
