I AGREE WITH CHESSTYA.THESE PUZZLES WOULD MAKE MORE SENSE IF BOTH SIDES PLAYED TO WIN,USUALLY BLACK MAKES STUPID MOVES WHICH ALLOWS WHITE TO MATE.LETS HAVE REALISTIC PUZZLES THAT WE COULD APPLY IN A REAL GAME.

Thankfully not a challenge.  Too bad in a real game though a kibitzer doesn't tell you "Mate in 5".  Would you have found it otherwise?  I ask this question of all the puzzles.

Can black not do an "En Passant" after G4?

No because the black pawn must be on f4 when the white pawn moves to g4 from it's g2 square for pxg3 e.p. As the black pawn is on the f3 square e.p. is not an option.

    PS.  Good puzzle.

en passant only possible after g4 if the black f-pawn was on g4, instead of g3.

Surely you mean the black pawn must be on f4 instead of f3 when the white pawn move from it's original g2 square to g4. If the black pawn was on g4 or g3 then g4 for the white pawn would not be possible.

As in yesterday's puzzle, the initial knight move is brilliant. Black has 3 possible responses.  I think his natural response (capturing the knight with the g-pawn) is probably his best.  Let's look at all three possibilities (1...gxf5, 1...Kh5, and 1...Kg5)
    I erred in my solution to 1. ... Kh5
    The proper line would be: 1. Nf3+  Kh5, 2. g4+!  Kg5, 3. Qe3#

I guess I'm blind, so I'm with Chessty from Denmark...  why not en passant?

Seems the most direct friday puzzle I've done...moves seemed to be almost forced...would I have seen knight sacrifice in game without knowledge of outcome?...don't know.
