I guess I'm a dummy, cuz I'm not sure why Black didn't play g4, blocking and gaining protected check...forcing White's King into a worse position or the exchange of a Rook for a protected pawn...

Good one! Nice ending training! Wink
Normally 2 connected pawns (like Black with g3 and h3) will win easily to a rook. The rook cannot stop both connected pawns in those cases. Here Black's king is too vulnerable ... Surprised

But why did it take so long to upload this?

What's so special about first page?

    1. ... Kh5 is FORCED
    2. ... Kh6 is VIRTUALLY FORCED.  (any other move allows: 3.Rh8#)
    3. ... Kg7 is FORCED
    4. ... No matter what black does, his second pawn is lost and white wins with King and Rook vs. unsupported King.

A rook alone cannot stop two pawns at the sixth rank. fortunately, the rook gets a little help from the enemy king
