interesting how an ok position for black eventually appeared to be incredibly weak

This puzzle looks familiar.  I think it may have been a daily puzzle several months ago.

    Hello everybody,

I think there is even better possibility, to move queen immediately to g4, and then comes two possible situations and white mates. Only if black gives his queen away, it will postpone it for few more moves. What do you think?

    Cheers from Croatia

Cheers.  I. Qg4+ sure looks like it wins but is probably slower than the puzzle solution because without deflecting black's dark squared bishop off the defense of g5, black has an extra piece to clog up and defend on the g-file, making checkmate take longer.  That would be my guess.

    1.Nd6 BxN  2.Qg4+ Qg5  3.QxQ  Kf7  4.Qg7+ Ke8  5.QxRh8+(w/Mate in One!)  5...Bf8  6.QxBf8#/Checkmate.  Also if 5...Ke7  6.Qf8#/Checkmate.  Nice lesson in Endgames!

After 5.Qxh8+, black has 5...Kf7 to delay checkmate, for what white would has two possible correct moves to mate in 3, as shown in diagram below...

After 2.Qg4+, black has only two legal moves: 2...Qg5 & 2...Kf7... And 2...Kf7 would lead game to shorter mate as shown in diagram of previous comment (#184)...
