can someone please explain why this puzzle ended like that. It appears, that Black has not lost yet.
Ah, was just waiting for someone to complain that we'd stopped before mate. In the final position, White has a winning material advantage (Queen versus Rook and two pawns) and Bogo knew perfectly well there was no realistic hope of a draw against a world-class opponent, so he resigned.
Well, I certainly did't envision THAT final position at the start. Brilliant.

Is 2...Kf7 forced?
Looks like it to me as White is threatening 3. f6+ winning a Rook and keeping the passed pawn, or if 2. ...Ree8; 3. Bxd8, Rxd8; 4. Rc7+ winning a piece. But if you think you can improve on Bogoljubow's defensive effort then post your moves and we'll discuss them!
