2/18/2014 - Mate in 3

Good puzzle.  I would have played 1.Qxc6, expecting 1. ... Rxc6 2.Rf8+ and 3.R1f7#.  But black could have spoiled that with 1. ... Be6, and it would take me 4 moves to checkmate his king.

But wait - maybe I missed something

I'm so sorry, but you can't beat me, dailypuzzle! It's my thread.

EDIT: Qxc6 is mate in 4.

why not in 3 move, by 1'st move Qxc6 ???

    1. Qxc6

    Rxc62. Rf8+Kg73. R1f7#

Because black plays 1...Bf5 insted of RxQ. If I weren't first (before the puzzle), I would post the analysis. Now I don't like to spoil it. :)

I have been unable to find a way for black to avoid mate-in-3 after 1.Qxc6

Can anyone show me a way?

    -------------------

    Thanks, MSC157.  1. ... Bf5 does it.  I had missed that.

    What's wrong with Qxc6?

At first I too thought the same.. but 2)...Rh7 would delay the game, and it ll become mate in four

    1. Qxc6 aim is Qxf6# 1... Rh7 2. Rf8+ Rxf8 3. Qxg6+ Kh84. Rxf8#

    You missed Qxg6+

U R Right.. Please check my analysis (i.e #47)  and let me know whether I ve done right.. Thanks

In your line 1. Qxc6 Be6 2. Qxe6 Rh7, there is mate next with 3. Qxc8#.  I'm pretty sure on 1. Qxc6 that 1...Bf5 is the only move that extends the game past move three for black.

    U r right.. :)

    Why not 1.Qxc5   Rxc5  2.Rf8+ Kg7 or (Kh7)  3.R1f7++

Things doesn't go like that. Black will response a strategic deffensive move:

    1. Qxc6    Be6

So, it wouldn't be a mate in three.

    Goodbye Smile

Check my comment. Be6 is also not much better.
