why doesnt the king move to g8 after the rook goes to h6? wouldnt that make things more difficult for white?

nevermind... i now see the faal flaw to that move.

hmmm.... i think that i may be right.... moving the king back instead of taking the rook may have been blacks better move.

That was answered back on page 1 of the thread. 1. ...Kg8; 2. Nf6+, Kf7 (the pawn is pinned and can't take the knight); 3. Qg6#

yes, i see that. the king once checked by the night can then move to f7... i haven't figured it out much further than that but seems it would be more difficult for white to get a mate than when the king takes whites rook outright.

ok, Qg6 is the finisher.... ok ok, i see it now. sorry for the trouble. ;) i should realize by now that folks much smarter in the ways of chess than i am are the ones creating these puzzles. peace

Hey! I spent a whole year being 12, and had a great time , but that was 42 years ago. I also make yawn comments when the puzzle is not much of a ....puzzle.

And today it was pretty basic stuff. This site sometimes has really hard puzzles, and I look forward to them. You have to make mistakes in order to learn.
