White must check black on every move, or black could launch a withering attack at g1.  Fortunately, every check by white leaves the black king with only one forced "escape," until he has no escape available - checkmate.

EDIT: Actually, black's first move is not exactly "forced".  He COULD move 1....Kd8, but that would allow 2.Qd7#.
