couldn't this have been accomplished via a number of different rook moves?
alright, but there were some better counters for black ( I think), though they lost in the long run.
What better counter? Black's only hope was that White would take the Bishop and yield a stalemate. The only spot White could have taken the Bishop and won was g8.
No, You aren't allow to take the bishop because of stalemate. Rg7 is the only move, all the others will not win as fast. If you dont have to play Rg7 you have to move one of your knights once. This makes it much more complicated
I thought the objective was to solve the puzzle not see who gets it first.
Now all you have is mate in 4!

Very Nice Puzzle.
It seems there are all kinds of winning moves until you realize that if the black bishop is taken on any except the back rank, then it's stalemate !
