I think there is a second solution, starting with 1. Nh6+ Kh8 2. Qf7 threatening 3. Qg8+ and 4. Nf7#.
I see what route you thinking of when you mention the move sequence to mate; however, I found that with your prescribed moves, Black as ample opportunity to delay checkmate... even if it is for a few more moves. A few examples are below.
after g6 Bb2 +
couldn't the black bishop defend that move?
Of course the black bishop can defend that move 3...Bd4, it delays checkmate for another move.
I think BlessedStar's point is that 1. Nh6+ isn't the best first move, cause it forces mate in 5 instead of mate in 4, which 1. Nf6+ would do.
Plus Knight takes Queen anyway!
Taking the rook leads to 3. Qh6 and 4. Qh7#, which have also been discussed already.
It takes the Queen though not the rooke! There's nothing left on for white so black can open his pieces on the board!

Nh6+ seems to be more logical than the other, also you force all black moves
what is your next move after black blocks whites bishop with his own. Black's bishop is guarded with the knight.
I like your thoughts!
Mate in three!!!!-- Three knight moves: H6 then Knight to F7 and then back to H6.... Done.
What takes the queen? Seriously, get out a board and move the Queen to h6. Mate is waiting for you at h7. If you cant see that, I cannot help you further. Message me if you want and I'll draw out a board.
Take it anyway, the knight is no concern.
The queen will just take the bishop's place and mate.
cool but tricky
If Rooke moves to G7 as is suggested, Knight can take Queen. King is not in Check. Problem Solved no?
What the hell is your point behind 1. Nh6+ Kh8
then... Knight to f7???
Then you say, back to h6 done and so King goes back to h8. What real progress have you made mpal? I'd really like to know your thought behind that silly movement.

1. Nh6+ forces nothing. It is the weaker of the two moves. If you had been following, you would know that.
ohhhhh flight square oops..
White couldn't find a way to sac his queen. What a sad ending!!
Knight taking the queen allows mate in 3, not mate in 4. Black would not allow this.
I think i am being confused by the actual puzzle ndskykng - im looking at it as it is played.
Please tell me how YOU would do it in 3 then after taking the Queen? I would LOVE to know???
If you are thinking Rooke to G8 you are very much mistaken!
And in any case. What ARE the chances of this being anything remotely like it is in real life. Not even a COMPLETE NOVICE could somehow plant his Queen in G1 with Pawn and Bish in front of it and Rooke and Knight blocking! Daft if you ask me!!
Are you serious?? Why would the rook move to g8?? Only a novice would hang that rook and entertain Rg8. An obvious mistake when Rxh7# is mate. You DID work through the solution right? That was move four in the main solution line 4. Rxh7#
That's why there was the preparatory move of 2. Rxg7
Black stops it temporarily with 2...Ng5. He didn't do that for fun, he was doing it to protect h7. Just wow.
