missed Queen sacrifice but good one. could be a puzzle with a end keeping the Queen alive bc today is the International Day of the Women, congratulations to all women who play chess or not!
Wow. I don't understand it, but wow nonetheless.
1. Kh3 is the kind of idea that makes you want to smack yourself upside the head once you see it (after a couple of minutes of wandering down fruitless paths), because it's so clearly exactly what's needed. In fact I was so sure it was right (and being in a bit of a rush, and no coffee) that I just played it without calculating the rest, then had the queen sacrifice totally take me by surprise and misplayed the final move. Hee.
The initial move jumped out at me, because g4+ was so inviting (with black's f-pawn pinned) So 1. Kh3 would prevent 1. ... Kxg4 and 1. ... Kxh4. White's subsequent moves were based on black's responses.
I liked this puzzle. Nice!
1. Bxe4 Nxe4 ( 1... g5 2. Qf7+ Kg4 3. Bxf5# ) ( 1... Kg4 2. Bf3+ Nxf3 3. Qxf3# ) ( 1... Qc6 2. Qxc6 Nxe4 ) ( 1... Qxe3 2. fxe3 g5 3. Qf7+ Kg4 4. Bxf5# ) 2. Qd1#
I understand, but taking it down the
1. Bxe4 Qc6
2. Qxc6 Nxe4
path doesn't give you mate in three. So why start with 1. Bxe4 when 1. Kh3 gives you a more efficient mate??
You're right, I meant that 1. Bxe4 is interesting move also
why black queen scarified?
Good question! It was as if he had a brain freeze!
But black had no better alternative. In the actual game, that initial King move (preparing to mate with the g-pawn) ended the game, the opponent resigned.
The queen at e3 at least for the moment prevents g4# - but in THIS puzzle, the queen sacrifice doesn't produce a win; it only delays the loss by check-mate for one move.
The best puzzle of the month.
tough one, but I am not that good
Kh3 nice one
