Will someone please tell me why the black queen cannot take the white rook on d4 and defeat that check move?  Someone else asked this also.

good first move by queen. at first i could`nt make out why the black queen could`nt take the rook, then i relised if it took the rook the white queen would check mate.

Ah, that was awesome.  I got too hung up on 1. ... Kf4 to follow the correct path very far.  I'm curious to see why that was bad for black.

    What if 1-Qg2  Kf4?

    On first look: 1. Qg2 Kf4 2. Re4! Qxe4 3. Qg3#

An unusual mate picture indeed! A key also for the whole operation!...

    3. ... Kh5, no?

Edit: Nevermind, I am stupid today.  :(  Annoyed, too, because this is one Saturday puzzle I had a good chance of getting.

Why not 3..Qe5, checking white's king and forcing it to g1 or h1, then 4...Qe1 check, etc?

Great puzzle! I missed the deflection moves, not paying attention to the fact that the black queen was tied down to defend g3.

@frustratedbytitans- That would allow 5.Qg3#. There was nothing black could do at that point.
