Rather simple if you go about it in a logical way. It is easily seen that white can get a draw by 1.Ng6 and then run the king to a1. The king holds one pawn, the knight the other. With the draw option secured, the obvious question is if there is more.
The only way white can win is by holding onto his last pawn, thus 1.Kc1 or 1.Kc2 plays for a win to get to b2 in time. Since the knight isn't close enough to catch the f-pawn by simply marching after it if it gets a head start, the only way to gain a tempo is by a check. Simple deduction has thus given us 1.Kc2(c1) f4 2.Nf7 f3 3.Nd6+ with little need for actual calculations. The question now is, what is the evaluation of this? If a win cannot be found, 1.Ng6 would be best as it is the easiest draw found.
Well, white threatens 4.Ne4, catching the passed pawn so black must win a tempo to hold on. There is only one way to do this, so the critical line is extended to 1.Kc2 f4 2.Nf7 f3 3.Nd6+ Ka4 4.Kb2 f2.
At this point, white cannot prevent black from promoting any longer and thus need to find a miracle resource. If there is none, this should be avoided at all costs. In face of immediate promotion, there are only 3 options available. Gain the new queen tactically, build a fortress to draw or checkmate his king. Option two goes out since were not interested in a draw here. Option one fails since the black king is obviously too distant from f1 to get forked.
Black's king has as only refuge the b5 square, so white need to hit a4 and b5 simultaneously. This can be done only from c3. Now, the only way to get from d6 to c3 in 2 moves is via e4 where, as a bonus, it attacks the dangerous pawn. Black cannot save both king and pawn at the same time and is thus forced to resign. 1.Kc2 it is!
I hope this explicit line of thought helps people out. I didn't include any check-backs to make sure nothing was missed, but there wasn't really any point in which either side could safely deviate. 1.Kc2 it is!
This is the first Daily Puzzle I've ever solved, although I made a few mistaken attempts, and didn't notice that last move to checkmate - I found it by accident!
From now on I'm going to give the Daily Puzzles more of a try. Too many times I give up...
