Why not qxd4 or nxd4 for the second move of the blacks? With a queen sacrifice, the mat can't happend, right? (2.qxd4 3be3 3qxe4!)
nope, the queen will block the King pathway, so means after qxd4 still f4 mate.
Wow, the e-column bishop and knight attacks almost everywhere :) King has nowhere to go! Worth remembering: "A bishop and a knight two squares far from it attacks almost everywhere around."

Yet note that the 5 move line originates from a divergence of white, not black... White would not play 2. f4 in the first place. It is not an option that black can take. 4 moves suffice.

Solved it. Nice puzzle. It's different (easier) if you know there is a possible mate in 4 and if you are just placed in front of a board with no clue.
