    the way i see it, white had the position and material to pull off the win unless they made some really dumb moves

    nice puzzle to make you think in terms of all of your pieces

    What prevents Rxh6 after Bxh6+ ?

    After:  2. Qf6+ Nxf6 3. Pxf6+ ....

    --> Also done.

    Move 6... or 6.Rxh8+ Kxh8   7.Qf6+ ...---> done

    I echo terricotta's question. Why doesn't the rook take the bishop?

    it must be a series of checks because black could just take the rook and mate if it was black to move

    In your first sideline not 4...Qf1+?? but 4...Qxd1++.  Also in that same line instead of 4. Qxf6?? play 4. Rg7+ Kf8 5. Qxf6+ (now Qf6 is check) Ke8 6. Qe7++.

    Terricotta, if black plays 1)..Rxh6, then follow 2)Qf6+!! - Nxf6 3)exf6+ - Kg8 4)Rd8+ Rxd8 5)Rxd8+ Kh7 6)Ng5#.

    After black plays nxn,Qf6 leads shortly to g7 mate in 5moves. Puzzle goes way too long for no gd reason----long winded and unnecessaryly complicated" BUT I LIKE IT"----being a puzzle nerd i knew it was late and looked for a gd puzzle too cover lateness.              GOOD WORK for a man who lost sleep waiting for his baby to get home !

    If 4. Qxf6?? then Qxd1++ or Rxd1++.
