I'm not sure if there is a name for what is happening to me, but I've kind of gone backwards into this abyss of tactical confusion.  It takes me much longer to spot and decide on a tactical direction than in the past.

After this position clicked, it seemed obvious and "easy" as some put it.  But until that very moment, it seemed like I had no real direction in my tactical query.  It is very frustrating.  If I am at a pathetic plateau, I certainly hope it passes very soon.

I'm glad Chess.com puts these up without description of the motif.

    My first thought was:

    1. Nxf7  Rxf7, 2. Qxh8#

However, Black would see that coming and respond 1. ... Rhg8
    So then 2. Nh6+  Rf7  3. Qxf7#

But black has an even better response:

    1. Nxf7 Kg8 and white has no check in sight.

Gotta look for a better first move.

    EDIT:
Ahaa!  Simple and direct.  1. Qe7+ Kg8, Now we have stacked Queen and Rook.
Standard Back-rank mating attack.  2. Qe8+ Qxe8 can hardly be called a queen sacrifice - it is an exchange and an old-fashioned back-rank checkmate with 3.Rxe8#

you can do a checkmate in one move if you take the rook on G-7 with your queen.

A very interesting puzzle - looks like it might be a real game.  But I am not sure the players made all the best moves.  Needs a lot of analysis.

I really was expecting 2. Be4+  Nf5 - then there are a lot of variations to be studied.

    But I really wondered about black's 2- ... Qd7?
Black really should have done something t prepare an escape for his King.  Maybe 2. ... Re5
