Here is Puzzle #6!
ANWSER to Puzzle #5: 1. Bg3! d3 2. Bxf2! d2 3. Be1! d1=R (d1=Q?? Stalemate!) 4. Ke2 Ra1 (4...Rc1 5. Bh4 Kg2 6. Kxe3=) 5. Bc3 Ra3 6. Bd4 Kg2 7. Bxe3 and a theoretical Draw!
Puzzle #6 itself:
Here, white moved 1. Kf2.
A) This move leads to a draw
B) This move is a big mistake, after which white looses. White could play better and force a draw.
For this problem, you will have to, like always, give analysis to prove your answer AND give the BEST MOVE for white. Enjoy!
I would have to say Bf3. Blocks the f pawn and controls the promotion squares for the h and d pawns.
I'm going to say B) This move is a big mistake.Black can then move Kd4 attacking the bishop. The bishop does not want to move as it needs to control both the long diagonal and the d-pawn.
White is dead. At least one pawn will queen.
I'm going to say B) This move is a big mistake.
Yes, having taken many a test, I would have to say that is almost certainly the correct answer... :)
Nalimov endgame databases says 1.Kf2 loses: 1...d2 2.Ke2 h3 3.Bf3 Kc2 4.Be4 Kc1 and the pawn queens. and 1.Bf5 draws. For example, 1.Bf5 d2+ 2.Kd1 f3 3.Be4 f2 4.Bg2 and none of the pawns can promote.
Yes, but did Nalimov say 1 Kf2 "was a big mistake, after which White loses"? :)
Tonydai, for crying out loud it is an endgame database. So what's with this thing "Yes, but did Nalimov say 1 Kf2 "was a big mistake, after which White loses"?
For your information Tonydai all the Nailmove endgame database displayed on the monitor was "Ke1-f2 lose in 17".
