help! how do I play this properly? (2rooks vs rook/bishop/pawn)

    it seems i at first posted this in a wrong forum so sorry for the double-post

     

    I recently played a game, that endet up  with quality advantage for me (rook to bishop) but 1 pawn disadvantage (so +1 for me via the point system), although I guess a bishop in an endgame position is worth slightly more and an additional pass-able pawn equals up the position.

    However I really had no idea how to play this properly (2 rook   vs   rook + bishop + pawn) and consequently lost the endgame (+ my enemy was very highrated, ~2000 I think).

     

    How would you play this properly? I found a few mistakes when analyzing, but most of them were made because I didn't know what else to do.

    At move 58 where he checked you, instead of moving away from the pawn you should have moved toward the pawn instead, protecting it from being captured. Your black rook was occupying the h rank so the next move would have promoted the pawn as your best outcome or perpetual check as your worst outcome.

    First of all I am the white player, not the black player. And the black player wisely moved away from the pawn because he would have been perpetually checked otherwhise. White cannot take the pawn as I already said in the comment because black would get whites rook in the next move (Rh2). So in this position black promotes the pawn no matter what.

     But thanks anyway

    A few thoughts which I hope would help. 

    The R usually has an easier time winning against N+P but a harder time  against B+P. This is particularly true in an open position with pawns on both wings.That is why after 23....Nc5,  it seems to me that 24.Bxa8 Rxa8 25.a5 was much preferable because White would have 2R+B against R+B+N, with the N the weakest link in Black's armory.

    After 24.Bxc5 Bxc5 25.Bxa8 Rxa8,  if Black's R cannot be prevented from getting control of an open file, it would be to White's advantage to challenge Black's R the very moment it goes to an open file with either ...Rd8 or ...Re8.  To be able to do this, White needed to double up his R , such as for example 27.Rcc1 so that on 27...Rd8 then 28.Rd1 and on 27...Re8 then Re1 and so prevent Black's R from penetrating White's camp via an open file. 

    Having allowed Black's R to enter an open file it was imperative that Black be prevented from playing ....Re2. That's why my recommendation is 29.Kf1.  

    Finally, White's best chance to save himself seems to me was to go for a draw by perpetual check with 40.Rff6.

    27. Kf1 (looks like an improvement) Rd8 (Re8 28. f3) 28. Rbc1 and your game looks stable enough to get your king active and convert your material advantage. Once your king gets a bit active, you can start looking for exchange sacs that bring you to an active vs. passive rook ending. I'm not using an engine, so I could be wrong.

    Thank you very much, both of you, all suggestions are very good - I wouldn't have thought of these during the game.
