Queen + King vs. Rook + King HELP!

I'm having a ton of trouble figuring out how to win this endgame!

There's a great endgame study video on how to win this endgame on Chess Videos:

BUT, it begins in a very specific position that I have never been able to achieve.

As I start from a random position, playing against Crafty:

If anybody can shed some knowledge on me, please do.

I would love to help, but i dont know your current position. Try to set up a fork or a pin To force the king to the desired position
