Yuri Averbakh claims that this position, which did not occur in Gligoric - Smyslov, Chigorin Memorial 1947, would have been losing for Black. Mark Dvoretsky states that it would not be losing, but that Black would have had a more difficult time than in the game.
What do you think?
I looked at the six-piece EGTB on the Shredder site last night while I had Rybka 4 with five-piece tablebases running (I need that 1.5 TB external for tablebases). There were many only moves, some difficult to see, and at one point Rybka thought it was up 4.46 pawns running at a depth of 32 plies.
Mostly, Black checked from the side, but a few times a check would be a losing move. Understanding the why and when to check or not check is part of the struggle.
