Another technique of cornering and checkmating the opposing K in a K+R vs. K ending is the Zugzwang method. Diagram below is an example of how this is done. Notice that the first thing that White does in the illustration is to bring the K forward towards the opposing K. Instead of having the R move first to fence off the opposing K.
I was doing some of the "opposition" puzzles from "reassess your chess" the other evening. I dreamt all night of 2 kings dancing around each other.
It's amazing how many "Strong" players misplay the simplest endgames. They play well enough to win in most cases... but rarely do they find the quickest kill. I have only recently set to studying these endings to learn the best techniques.
