No it's not possible in a real game, it's just an endgame study. I'm not sure how much practical value this puzzle has, it's mostly just a bit of fun, although it reminds me how devestating knights can be under the right set of circumstances.

I think it's a quicker mate if white started with 1. d8=N

d8=N leads to 1...Kd7+ and black can force mate in two. If white plays 2. Ne6, then black can reply 2...f1=Q 3.Kxa5 Qb5 mates.

2.Nb6+ leads to Rxb6 and mate.

Is there another variation I'm overlooking? Did you have a continuation?

1. d8=N+ Kd7

2. c8=Q+ Kd6

3. e8=N+ Ke7

4. f8=Q#

Doesn't work. Kd7+ puts the white king in discovered check by the rook on g6. White has to force check on every move and keep the king on the sixth rank.

Oh, i didn't see the check from the rook. Okay, that changes everything then!
