Drunk chess only affects the people that choose to do it so why is there so much criticism from the high and mighty?  There is no need for anyone to get their panties bunched up over someone enjoying a game of chess in their own way.

Drinking to get drunk and using drugs to get high are both unhealthy activities. That's incontrovertible fact. I'll concede that drinking in moderation isn't terrible (in fact, a tiny bit of alcohol can even be healthy), but as a general statement, it's harmful. Using marijuana very moderately may not even be that bad for you, but it's still a silly idea because of the legal risks involved. Being high for one night isn't worth the months in jail it could lead to, or the associated disgrace. Besides, alcoholism and drug addiction always come from believing that using drugs and alcohol is okay. Although people that believe so don't always become dependent on substances, people that don't will never become addicted unless they deviate from their moral standard.

The whole point of chess is to serve as a productive, intellectual, recreational pursuit. It is historically associated with chivalry and prudence, so playing chess drunk is a bit contradictory in that sense. However, if you are drunk, then playing chess would certainly be an interesting activity! But...let's tone it down and try not to hurt ourselves. There's plenty of healthy fun to be had sober, so keep occasional that which needs to be occasional, but enjoy the occasion when it arises! And please, never discourage those who try to lead an abstinent life; they're trying to do what they believe is best for them, and their freedom to do so needs to be respected.

The relativism is saying there is nothing wrong with altering ones mind.  I was hoping people who claim to be "logical" would see that but if they did than they woudl have to admit they are wrong.  Since you have a problem acknowledging somethign self evident let me be even more clear.  It is wrong to alter ones mind in that fashion.  To say it isnt is relativism.  If you need an explanation on what relativism is than please ask.  I say enough things to be insulted for but to  be insulted for something that clear is a bit odd.

At least get the spirit of my post before making assumptions about my point of view.  I never said there is nothing wrong with altering one's mind.  I said there is nothing inherently immature about the desire to do so.  You had made a false statement.  I corrected you.  Deal with it.

Jeez, sounds like my old Health Ed teacher.  Where do they get these modern teenagers sounding like they're narrating some 1950s mental hygiene film?  It's the kind of thing that can drive you to drink...next they'll be showing me that "two eggs frying in a skillet" PSA (which had to have been thought up by somebody on drugs btw).

Of course, maybe I'm just sore about all of this because of those months I spent in the slammer after smoking that joint one night.  Yeah, that's a chunk of my life I'll never get back again.

I don't understand how chess and drinking go together. I remember when my uncle was drunk (he didn't actually play chess) and looking at a chess game I was playing, the position was checkmate but he said "but he can go here" and put black's king on the edge of the board, next to the h file which isn't even a square!

You can mix chess, drinking and gambling in the following way:

There was a guy who I beat "most" of the time. He probably scored 1 win and 1 draw out of every 10 games. So we set up a system.

When I won, he would drink 4oz of beer.
When we drew, I would drink 10oz of beer.
When I lost, I would drink 24oz of beer.

So after 10 games, it would be 32 to 34, which was pretty even. Unfortunately he lost I think the first 7 or so games. And he was like "dude let's keep playing but stop the drinking...". Of course I lost the next two! :-)
