I'm with you, Woj... it's a silly thread that is about seeking validation for playing while drunk like the title says. "Hey, I'm drunk, stoned, whatever, and playing online... anybody else?" When you called it out, you got labeled as judgemental. You're right... making all behaviors equal is a form of relativism. Nothing is good or bad, it just is.

The relativism is saying there is nothing wrong with altering ones mind.  I was hoping people who claim to be "logical" would see that but if they did than they woudl have to admit they are wrong.  Since you have a problem acknowledging somethign self evident let me be even more clear.  It is wrong to alter ones mind in that fashion.  To say it isnt is relativism.  If you need an explanation on what relativism is than please ask.  I say enough things to be insulted for but to  be insulted for something that clear is a bit odd.

What he's saying is wrong is "the notion that the desire to alter one's state of mind is inherently immature." That is a logical statement, and patently not ridiculous, as you stated. Your digression onto relativism is not only a non sequitur, but seems to belie a misunderstanding of the term. To say it's wrong to "alter ones [sic] mind in that fashion" is in your case a specific case of moral absolutism. So far, so passable. To say it isn't is not necessarily relativism. It could, for instance, be a case of positive absolutism. Therefore, you were stringing together unrelated, misguided and ill-informed statements.

I've got too much immoral mind-altering to be getting on with, so if you wish to keep on babbling feel free; maybe someone else will reply.

I guess you say big words and pretend you know what you are talking about.  You are a case of someone who has had a bit of education but never really learned anything.  You hear terms and know there defintions but dont truly understand them.  In that vein it is understandable why you still dont understand what relativism is.  I guess by saying you wont be back you get to feel good about yourself and think that you have "won" but in reality you arent continuing the discussion because you were proven wrong and are too prideful to admit it.

everything in moderation, including moderation.

everything in this world around us is a drug in some way or another.  anything you do to change your brain's chemistry, be it food or television or taking a walk, is a drug.  we are sensory beings. stimulus-response.  all we have learned and done in history is a direct result of it feeling good.

if the drug chess feels good and the drug beer feels good then they might just be enjoyable as hell together. i just play live chess games when im up late and playing sleepy or drunk.  i save the long games for sober introspective chess.

whatever works for you.  arrogance counts as a drug too.

"Looser" thread?  Maybe you should tighten it up then for us genius.  I'm drunk and even I can spell.  Although I don't expect much from a Des Moines resident anyway.  You're probably over by South Ridge somewhere aren't ya?  If not E14th no doubt.

You are exactly right and Wojytla is, I won't say stupid, just very ignorant so I don't hold it against him.  Check out this thread I wrote awhile back which I believe is what you may be talking about.  People are slaves to dopamine and serotonin and everything that causes a release of either these of two in their brains.

God I was hoping I wouldn't get drug into this but once you started talking about biochemistry I couldn't help it.

Stating it's not inherently wrong to alter one's mind isn't relativism.  It is not defined as 'disagreement with wojtyla on whether something is a universal truth'.

I don't drink, though I generally take a hit on the crack pipe before playing.

I enjoy playing chess when I'm drinking. I just don't play online, or for money or any kind of dare. I have learned my lesson.

That being said I also enjoy playing chess when I am sober. and when I am high (although I play worse high then I do drunk).

I guess thats because I ENJOY playing chess, no matter what state I'm in.

Good thing about playing drunk is you always feel the move you are making is such a strong and clever one Cool.... Until the day after you wake up with hangover and find out your opponent's crushing reply! Sealed
