gvs567 asked: What are chess engines?
Laughingknight replied: They're little bitty motors that fit inside chess pieces.

Is there a wide variety of chess toys available? e.g. pull-back rooks that shoot across the board.

Treating chess pieces as toys is a bit like Rolf Harris covering Stairway to Heaven, surely?

I don't think so. All I can find pictures of is this handmade one from Russia.

Inexplicably, we missed that one from the list of materials.

This reminds me of a Harry Potter Scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRCgQ3yQuIg

They usually play wizard chess on regular sized boards and moving pieces.

They made a 20in x 20in chess board based on this one; but it cost almost $400.

Indeed we all did miss it. I think we all were listing materials that we have seen.

So textile fibers and materials is another category to add to your list.

We may think that some day rice will be used to fabricate pieces and boards using rice paper.

Vegetables and flowers petals could also be used.

This looks like an early 'chess engine' - use of which is not allowed on this site. I'm not even sure whether you're allowed to post pictures of them.

Not strictly a toy - more a sensible precaution.

Do you wear the appropriate safety equipment when playing chess?

Not acrylic, I hope. Those can be itchy & scratchy.
