4.Ng5 Bc5 and going in for a Traxler - would be quite entertaining.

    I mostly play these lines as 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Na5 lines

I have played 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 b5!? - the Ulvestad variation - with some success in blitz, but have never had it work out right in correspondence chess. It doesn't have the same surprise value. Fritz variation might be better.

When I'm white I usually play 4.d4 and go into either modern two knights or Max Lange attack - tricky and trappy for both sides.

I reckon you should 4.d4, Daeru. I remember you smashing the hell out of me in live chess with Max Lange attack

d3 Nc3 and Ng5 are my candidates btw

    d3 is boring...

    Nc3 Nxe4! Nxe4 d5 is good for black

Only play Nc3 unless you gambit the pawn after Nxe4 0-0

Ng5!!! it wins a pawn by force so why not do it? even if you have to weather the attack the kibitzers like me will do it for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!Tongue out

I remember that game, it had transposed from Urusov Gambit :)

Yea, I like d4 as well. I really don't want to go into Ng5 d5 exd5 Na5 so it is either d4 or d3 imo. Thoughts?

d4 is much more exciting if you have to choose from d3 or d4 then do d4

    Yep,

    I play 4.d4

Bb4 + give yourself oprotunity to castle, and make him waste tempo and weaken his pawns before he castles

I don't really care for 4...Bb4+, I'll look at it, but I prefer the mainline 4...exd4 5. e5. This is where I would like to deviate with 5...Ng4, which I have played once before. My game with 5...Ng4 is actually still in progress, and I like the positions black can get.

I don't see how Bb4+ makes white lose a tempo. I think it makes black lose a tempo after 5.c3. What am I missing?

    You're not missing anything. I play 4...exd4

    Current Position:

It is either 5.e5 or 5.0-0 imo.

I have played many games with 5.0-0 and a few games with 5.e5.

e5 might be a bit overextending dont you think?

5 c3 is not the move white wants to make, he would rather castle to safety

    oh I suggest 0-0

0-0 for sure its suicide to leave the king in the center here

Never seen this 4.d4 stuff before, it looks like something you might see in the old-style Giuoco Piano without the c3 push for White - but also the development of the DSB for Black. For that reason alone e5 is probably a reasonable option, it would be interesting to see what you do with it! I'd assume 5.e5 d5 6.Bb5 Ne4 7.Nxd4 and it looks more promising than I first assumed actually. Personally I would try that - 0-0 is of course a decent alternative but then Bc5 looks testing, or even Nxe4 might be good for Black, up two pawns (obvs that material would get sacced back).

    I recommend 5. Ng5. Fun stuffLaughing

    5.O-O d5 6.e5 is Max Lange attack

5.e5 leads to the modern lines of Two Knight's Defense

5.Ng5 d5 leads to the usual 4.Ng5 lines

e5 is the most solid option... Followed up by maybe c3 to gambit a pawn for development?

At this point, it is hard to argue which move is better but since I know more about this variation I play 5.0-0

Bad choice! I've never played or played against that before Wink

So what now? There seem to be several options. Taking the pawn looks really sketchy, but it looks like it might be playable. 5...d3 seems logical, since white probably would still like to play 6. e5. 5...Be7 gets ready to castle, guards the king along the e file, making the pawn capture an easier option. It also prevents potential pins. 5...Bb4 looks kind of wierd, but it covers the rook's best square and will be attacking the knight if it moves to c3. 5...Bc5 also looks good. If you have good arguments for or against any of these moves, or have another to recommend, please comment.
