Just wondering if anyone out there has played Seirawan chess yet?  I got the pieces for it the other day and my brother and I love it!!  There is so much power on the board.  If anyone has played it, did you like this variation?  What point value would you give the Hawk and the Elephant?

House of Staunton sells plastic Seirawan sets.

It's a variant invented by GM Yasser Seirawan.

It has a piece called an Elephant which moves like a rook and a knight, and also a piece called a Hawk which moves like a bishop and a knight.  They are placed onto the board when there is a vacancy on the back row, so that a standard 8x8 chess board can be used.  Check it out on YouTube.  GM Yasser Seirawan gives an interesting demo.

sounds interesting. I think it would be neat to make a variant where you had to earn your new pieces. Players could earn some sort of resource by occupying certain squares, and use it to "purchase" a hawk, elephant, or other pieces.

It is very entertaining!  The two extra pieces are almost as powerful as the Queen.  and they can be placed differently in every game, so you have an almost endless variety of openings.  I like the Hawk as it behaves like a bishop that can change its color of square to make a quite powerful battery with a bishop or a queen.  It is fun to penetrate into someone's territory and use the Knight power to set up some nice forks.

well, u can get the pieces as u develop a knight.... u dont need an extra turn 2 get new pieces on the board, u can make ur move and put the new piece on the board in the same turn..

You can promote a pawn to one of these pieces as well as a queen.  I don't know how the "purchase" thing would work, but if you keep thinking outside the box you may just come up with the replacement for chess (or at least a cool variant).

Can this be played online anywhere? I would love to try it out, before I go off and bought pieces.

I haven't been able to find it online yet.  You can get the pieces from House of Staunton for less than ten bucks though.  They are plastic, but really high quality.

Psh. I made Capablanca chess pieces (Archbishops and Chancellors are functionally equivalent to Hawks and Elephants) by sawing, filing, and gluing pieces from an identical chess set. Tongue out

Seirawan chess seemed a bit odd in the way the new pieces are placed - I like how it lets you rely on already-tested openings, but it seemed a bit unchesslike to be able to place pieces on the board, especially in ways that defend a previous move.

That being said, the lack of the familiar 8x8 board makes the first few moves in a 8x10 variant like Capablanca or Bird chess a puzzle to me every time.

I have never heard about this game before.  The game seems interesting.  I would like to play it one day.  Is there any website where you can play it?

Other cool chess variations include chinese chess, sak city (suicide chess), bughouse, and etc.  To learn more about other chess variations, please visit my website at www.geocities.com/chessdiva.show

I didn't claim Seirawan chess is on a 8x10 board.  I was claiming that the 8x8 board of Seirawan chess is one advantage over the less familiar 8x10 board of those other variants.
