Very popular in Armenia. After two consecutive Olympiad golds it is even rising in popularity. Playing chess with your guest at home over a cup of coffee (while the women are busy in the kitchen Wink) is as common as playing backgammon. The youth may be less enthusiastic about it, but the elderly definitely are avid chess players.

It's believe chess is quite popular in the UK, but it's almost invisible in the media.  No TV coverage and just a handful of very brief weekly newspaper columns...Cry

in my part of the USA (Appalachian mountains) chess is almost an obscure magical creature that one only sees during a solar eclipse or during power outages...i think the highest rated Wv player ever was like 2300 or something, and he was in the state psychiatric institution in weston (no joke)...we're not really that bad but when i tell people i use to play in tournaments they respond to me like im crazy or making it up...id say most of us (Americans) know how to move the pieces but only in certain states is it seriously played by a significant % of the population...i play around a 1550 rating and ive only lost one game to a non-tournament non-regular internet player in years and i just wasnt paying attention...speaking of psych wards and institutions, i get my best games from my patients (i take care of the mentally ill) not the "normal" population

I would agree with you, jpd.  No one in my area seems to play much, so before I even started really studying chess a few months ago... I was still beating almost everyone I played.  And I'm terrible!  I've never seen a news story or heard anyone talking about chess at all in my daily life.

It wasn't until I joined here and started losing frequently and failing at all the tactics puzzles that I realized how far I had to go. Embarassed

jarlaxle (wheres artimis) i had a roommate from georgia in college, his mom was one of the Glamorious Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW), and i pulled out a chess board oneday to play a friend of mine.  Scot, my georgian roommate, exclaimed "Arent you from Westvirginia! How do you know how to play chess!" he was serious too...I said "Scott we have indoor plumbing, we wear shoes, brush our teeth, watch satalite tv, use the internet and some of us have hobbies other than huntin, fishin, and cow tippin!  your from a freakin trailer park in Georgia you have no room to talk"

Wow - I thought "get'er done" was a Saskatchewan thing... had no idea they said that down south, too?  Do you guys say "give'r", too?
