what position should I paint on chess painting?

I recently decided to make a vintage looking chess painting...I made the grid it is cream and olive acrylic paint on 18x18 canvas. Trying to decide what piece set up I want to enshrine.... Here were some initial thought I had tell me what you think. 1) a tactic to eventually hang in my man cave behind the bar or in game room viewer would be able to ponder 2) final position of a famous game 3) a favorite opening position or opening tactic. 4) A famous checkmate 5) starting position 6) leave it blank so I alway have a board hanging on my wall to play on??? What do you think any ideas?

I'd be inclined to paint the board set up with only the first move (probably e4) played. I fancy it plays on the imagination a little more than knowing the outcome of the game. The possibilities are almost endless :)

That way you can gauge the chess acumen of your guests and start a lively discussion over taking the N or not.  Casual players will be impressed that they recognize it's from the Ruy Lopez (or not).

Sorry if this message bumps my original post. I have almost finished assembling my chess board on canvas but I have found that framing a picture with a wood frame  "carved out of one piece of wood" stained and rubbed to look like vintage framing is harder than I thought.  I have almost spent more time on wood working (or pretending I know how to work with wood)!

After all of this time I think I want to leave the canvas blank! was thinking about a famous position from Kasparov imortal game to hang in my office but not sure....

just out of curiousity do you think there would be a market for vintage looking chess position paintings?

I finally finished. This is acrylic on canvas (beige and olive green), I also made the frame myself and stained it.  I didn't paint a position with pieces (quite frankly because I don't have the skills yet) but think it is actually interesting because it doubles as a chess board...if you don't have a board..you can take the painting down if you have pieces. I've actually seen similiar pieces of artwork  in my wife's pottery barn magazines.  --Cheers mates!

The move that immediately comes to my mind is the "shower of gold move" (yes, that move has even been given a name!) from this immortal game:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levitsky_versus_Marshall

Per that Wikipedia page, that is only the 3rd most famous move in history, however. The top 10 most famous moves are listed at...

timkr.home.xs4all.nl/chess/fant100.htm

...though I'm not familiar with those games.

congrats on making that. it took 8 months.

You should paint the above position!

When ever you have a visitor you can tell them it is white to move.

Than you can ask them which move would they play in the above position?

The answer they give may prove to be very enlightening!

Yeah, from painting squares to making frame (and frame backing) to hanging = 8 months in this case and about $200 ish in materials. However, I could probably cut expenses if I did more than one at a time and make several in a week now that I know the method and am past the learning curve.

I also have 3 kids and a job so this was more like a hobby project and I like to take my time in addition to playing actual chess!

This was going to be my suggestion as well.  Amazing move.

This move was the background on my phone for around a year (people always asked me if I was playing chess whenever I opened my phone... it was quite amusing.)

I have a wooden chess board in my room with the pieces usually set up. The most common position, by far, is this one:

If you don't want a game, I would strongly encourage you to paint this position:

There's nothing like that nostalgic and wonderful feeling of starting a game of chess.

And not facing the sicillian.

I will probably make more, I've actually thought about a few positions from Kasparov's imortal game

I believe that first one is the Gold Coin Game I mentioned. I believe the second one is Morphy's famous Opera House game, another immortal game.

Spod is correct!

The first game was played by Frank Marshall it is his Immortal Game.

I wrote a very nice article on this:

https://www.chess.com/blog/X_PLAYER_J_X/frank-marshall-the-legend

The game is often called the Shower of Gold Game.

People in the audience showered gold pieces at the board after he played Qg3.

The queen can be captured 3 ways.

Every way loses the game!

The first 2 captures leads to a swift checkmate

  • 24.hxg3 leads to Ne2#
  • 24.fxg3 leads to Ne2+  25.Kh1  Rxf1#

The last capture leads to black being a piece up which is completely winning for a Grand Master such as Frank Marshall

  • 24.Qxg3 leads to Ne2+ 25.Kh1  Nxg3+  26.Kg1  Ne2+  27.Kh1

if 26.fxg3 Rxf1# which is why white has to move the king back to g1!

Afterward 27.Kh1 black will be up a knight completely winning.

The Second Game is the Opera House Game.

It was played by Paul Morphy against 2 different chess players.

Paul Morphy ended the game is a very lovely checkmate!

Which before the checkmate was done he did a lovely queen sacrifice!

The last position shown is a very common position!

In fact, Some chess players say depending on the 3rd move you make in that position!

It reveals something about your personality!

My favorite idea. As a painting, this would probably look best.
