The king is the ultimate piece. If you lose the king the game is over. So you must give critical care and protection to the king to make sure he does not get comprimised. However, in the endgame the king can be a useful piece which can walk towards the center and eat up the remaining pawns.

I guess you know how to play chess... so there's something to this question that puzzles me.  What is the sound of one hand clapping?  In chess there's this hierarchy (I hope that's the correct spelling), and the king is number 1, like Elvis Presley, the king of Rock 'n Roll, all the rest have lower ranks...  If you lose it, it's over!

the king in chess is kind of like the quarterback in american football(or whoever has the ball). i guess you could imagine the king as the maestro (orchestra leader)who directs all the players but doesn't really play an active part till later.

You can also use your king in the middlegame for defence of pawns (for example f7, g7, h7 after castling). As I know some people even tried to use it for attack, but I think it isn't good idea.
