I wonder how the bishop escaped from f1. Perhaps a pawn promoted on e8 to a bishop.

The answer is white is an idiot for underpromoting to a bishop.

I guess white was a smartass and thought he could mate with the bishop; didn't see the block with the rook.   His idiotic plan backfired.

Smartass still has a winning position though...

1... Rb7 2. Nc5 and white wins a rook after which he has a material advantage of two minor pieces plus pawn against a rook (2...Rb2 3. Bxb7+ Rxb7? 4. Nxb7 Kxb7 would obviously leave white with easily winning pawn ending). The ending should be an easy win for white because he has two pawns so black cannot even sacrifice the rook for white's last pawn and force her to chekmate with bishop and knight.

I did that once. ^ _ ^ I thought I had my opponent and thought I onyly needed a bishop and it led to my demise.

Nothing is wrong with the placement of pieces on board:ultimately, black is going to checkmate.

Craziest game I've ever seen. Every other move leaves a piece hanging. Both sides made terrible moves. What were the circumstances? Was white (who from his rating is a very good player) trying to teach a raw beginner? Making deliberate mistakes to see if the beginner would see them?

It all began as a joke :)

I wanted to see, if anybody notice the strange placement of the bishop (it has no way out from the starting position) and finds the answer, that a pawn promted to a bishop. Tha'is all. The game up there is just made up.
