What is the point of 1...f5? I've not heard of that opening for black, but I've not studied openings much, either.

It's the Dutch Defense... f5 fights for control of the central e4-square. Black has an extra pawn in the center, but also an exposed king. It's ambitious, but it's also avoids main lines and it's sound enough to have been played by many world champions.

What is the point of 1 ... f5? Well, Black obviously wants to attack on the kingside. It's called the Dutch Defense and has been played by Super-GM Veselin Topalov.

This game belongs in the much-ignored game showcase forum.

I believe I saw the ending from the 11th move on as a Puzzle some where. Who played this game?

Delicious... castling to mate would have been real pretty too.

Can I just say that the Queen's not really being sacrificed, as you win?  I think a real sac is when you give up a piece (or lose an exchange) for an advantage.....

But then again, it's just my two cents.

The distinction you're looking for has already been in an old book I saw by Spielman.  He distinguished between "sham sacrifices" where the material is guaranteed to be recovered, and "real sacrifices" where all that is gained is position.

I agree. It may be true that it's technically still a sacrifice since material is being given up, but I'm with you when you say that a "real sac" is giving up a piece when there is NO forced mate (ie; Fischer's "Game of the Century" vs. Donald Byrne).

That's a great game! That King had to get mobile! I think that's the most active I've ever seen a King on the run.
