the next move was a4 b6, Bd4 Qb4, Qf4 Qxa4, upon which I sacrificed my queen for the computers bishop and two rooks after putting it in check on f7.  this is what it looked like after that.

Upon which it just took my bishop and rook and I was in serious trouble of losing the pawn about to promote.

1. Rxf7  Rxf7

2. Qxf7

Can Black respond effectively? White threatens mate with Qxe7.

I think you got the right idea, 1. Qh4 and black is stuck for a move. Say he goes Kd8.  There follows 2. Rxf8+ Rxf8 3. Qxe7+ Kc8 4. Qd7+ Kb8 5. Bd6#

Ah, but if I go Qh4 it will just respond with b6 thus moving my black bishop out the way and eliminating threat on e7.

Im thinkin maybe I coulda immediately moved black bishop to 1. Bd4 threatening Queen and g7 pawn.  then take the pawn then Bxg7 Bxg7.  I think I would have been in a better position then.  hmm.
