You mean someone using a computer? If they are cheating don't you think they'd be rated the strength of their computer, like 2000 or above? Otherwise why worry about it, just don't play that person again if you think they're cheating.

If I lose, it means my opponent was cheating ;).

I believe this topic has been done to death on this site. The consensus seems to be that it is not possible to detect cheats because of the varied methods they might use. However chess.com staff say that they have methods to detect cheating and they will ban anyone who is caught.

I just wonder how long a person would go on cheating at internet chess and for what purpose? There is no money involved and after they acheived their phoney meaningless high rating wouldn't their bizarre super ego trip be satisfied and they'd get bored and move on to something else. Meanwhile they never experience the pleasures and satisfactions of actually playing chess that the rest of us do.

eddiewsox was right.. totally agreed.

I know that sometimes people with very low rating suddenly play very strong against you. This is questionable for cheating but there is nothing to do (and nothing should be worried) since we can play many other games... why take it serious for a cheating one. Anyway even the cheat ones can best point out our mistake and weaknesses. I mean if we are very strong in chess cheating is meaningless. If we always try to make best moves against every players, cheating cheaters would be our best mentor, just like those stronger ones.

And please don't blame people without any proves... I was blamed like that as well. My rating was 1700 or somewhere around that, then I got a good personal chess coach who push my rating up to 1900. my game was much better and people said that i were cheating!!

I've actually had the privledge of helping out with the mod/engine detection teams here at chess.com.  The answer is really quite simple... if they play like an engine, they probably are one.  What's the difference between honest play and engine play?  Well, believe it or not, it has pretty much nothing to do with the quality of the games... the fact is that the best players ever to play (Fischer, Kasparov, etc...) only have about an 80% or less matchup rate (the percentage of moves that are agreed upon by Crafty, Fritz, Rybka, etc...) ... a cheater will have 100% or nearly when we check their games with an engine.

So to make a long story short.  If you think you're playing a cheater, report abuse and chess.com will take care of it.  We know when someone is cheating and they will be dealt with quickly.

Many chess AI's have standard time constraints, like "on expert level make move within 15 seconds".  So if all of their moves are in standard increments watch out.  I once played a 800 something in a blitz game (I was 1400ish at the time) and he started dominating all over the board, I started watching his move time, every move was exactly 10-12 seconds apart

This is online chess. Ratings are meaningless. Not just your opponents but yours.  I could name players I've played against know I KNOW have cheated, but why bother?  I feel sorry for these players.  The only ratings that matter are over-the-board.

Some people (including GM's) get around this by playing short games , e.g 2 mins + 1 sec.

Remember, we are on here to have fun not be competitive.  Competitive online players should use FIGS or playchess where computers detect the cheats much better than any other site.

I barely know the legit moves let alone moves that are deemed to be illegal. This subject has a tinge of personality disorder.

I disagree. Ratings are not meaningless. They do not have a great deal of meaning if you take them out of context but, for comparing players who play on chess.com, they carry quite a lot of meaning. Try challenging one of the top rated players to a game and a player 400 or 500 points below you. The difference in the quality of play will be immediately evident.

Also, you may not be here to be competitive, but a lot of people are. That's the way it is with a site that attracts thousands of people - many will have different priorities to you. All generalisations are dangerous (even this one).

Doesn't have to be about ratings.  Could be a severe allergy to cheaters.  Like mine Yell.
