I played this game recently where I won but I felt a little guilty

Is this considered fair play???

Any comments are welcome :)

I felt as if I had no choice being down by three pawns going for the draw.

If someone unwisely turns down a draw it is perfectly fine to thrash them, it is the same as caputring a blundered piece in my mind.

If your opponent puts himself in a drawn game to a lost game, it's your job to take advantage of it. Why feel bad about winning?

Am I the first to notice that the title is incorrect? Anyways, I've drawn similar games, and won games with a major piece down. Also, a quote:

“You cannot play at Chess if you are kind-hearted”.

I agree with the majority...you have done nothing wrong here.  I've been in a similar situation where I was up on material and still lost through lack of planning ahead.  And that's all your opponent did - failed to plan ahead.  If you are up material and cannot win...

Don't feel bad. It's not your fault your opponent made so many mistakes.

yup it was a strange 1300 game

In our defense though, it was like 2AM and we were very tired...

Why on earth would you feel guilty? You played quite correctly and your opponent played poorly... feel guilty when you play as your opponent did and you blow a won game... that's when I feel guilty!

You so outplay your opponent in the ending I wonder how he got three pawns up on you in the first place.

At any rate, _of course_ you are going for the draw there (no guilt in that)... and your opponent's primary worries should be, A) avoid blunders, and B) avoid stalemate and perpetual check traps... but he doesn't see this.

Another quote for you: There is no position so won, it plays itself.  I think your opponent fell into the trap of believing he was so far ahead he could stop thinking.  He paid the price.

I agree with everyone else.  However, at 9. you could have used your discovered checks to capture other pieces, such as his pawn at c7.  At move 8 you found yourself in control, and while forcing the draw is one thing to do with that newfound power, trying to steal a win is also an option  =P
