I have just a little experience with the dutch defense.  A couple years ago I played in a thematic tournament at GK where everyone had to play the opening moves 1 d4 f5, and I learned that Black's plan is not to be underestimated.  I'm not much of a fan of the stonewall, but somehow fell into it here.  My play felt strong through the first half of the game, and then I got totally lost. Frown  Your help at figuring out the right plan is appreciated...

I don't know. You were certainly stonewalled.

Just an impression I had was that black made too many time-consuming moves. The whole business of moving the King to allow the Bishop on c8 to go to g8 just didn't feel right to me. Maybe if it had been exercised with threats or something....  I thought, when I saw it, that 12...a5 was a mistake, as was letting your Queen face down that Rook on d1. An attack on the flank (white's attack on the Queenside) should be answered with an attack in the center.

Very interesting game! 16.Bxf3 is what I would have played on the spot, but it is quite obvious one or two moves after that variation you posted is much better indeed.

But really, I don't really know I would have got beaten harder than you in this game... but it was a very instructive one to post!

i think 11...c5 to combat his spatial advantage is stronger. it's a temporary pawn but the pawn will be douled & isolated with an semi-open(& openable) c-file for your Rs and an a5 post for the Q. With the center closed & no K-side attack, his 22 Kh1 made no sense i know he'd like his K off the dark squares because you have the dark squared B but 22 Bc3! preparing to double Rs or Alekhine's gun and open the b-file looks better.

Thanx for the advice.  I'm going to investigate the 11...c5 idea and 12...Qc7.

After 11...c5 12 bxc5 dxc5 White doesn't play 13 dxc5? but instead 13 d5!Frown (with the help of a chess engine).

12...Qc7 might be best move, it aims at e5, gets the queen off the d file, and clears the back rank for the rooks.  There's not much more to ask for from a single move.

Hi Anax. Your interesting Be6-g6 maneuver took me by surprise. I was waiting for c5 and the ensuing complications or the direct occupation of of e4 by the knight. I opted for Be2 because after 8. Bd3, 8 ... e5 forces me back e2 anyway. I felt I was better at move 19, but not by a whole lot. I was sure you would duke it out with me on the king side with moves like Bh6, Nh5, Qh5, or maybe Bh6 and g5 followed by Rg8 and Qe8-h5. The move you chose (Ng4?!) lost a tempo on the aforementioned plan and the king, as you observed, went right when he ought to have stayed put. To my mind, the two most intriguing features of the game were the illusory stability of your stone wall and the illusory instability of my king's side, both of which were underscored by the speed with which I was able to filter into your queen's side and activate the 2 bishops. Best. Rob
