A freind of mine, whose opinions I generaly respect, and whose rating I admire, said something to the effect that gambit are just cheap tricks, and not real chess since grandmasters don't play them.  I guess I'm not a grandmaster.  This game is what followed.

On another note, this should probably be in the showcase forum.  Does anyone know how/if I can move it?

By the way, whoever called the Evans gambit a cheap trick, not played at grandmaster level... is a total patzer :P.

I play the Italian Game a lot, but never the Evans Gambit..

Anyone up for a friendly game?

I talked to some members at my local club about the evans gambit...I don't think i'd ever play it over he board because I don't see how white get's sufficient play for the pawn if black plays effectively. Is the evan's gambit sound?

There's 1,353 Evans Gambit games on Chessgames.com. I would imagine it's at least somewhat sound.

I'd have to disagree with your friend on that comment.  I wouldn't think of a gambit as a trick, but a means of getting good play in return for a material disadvantage.  Of course, "look before you sac!"

Is Evan's Gambit sound?  Well... it is when you win with it, but not so much when you lose.  IMHO white gets good compensation for the pawn in terms of development, central control, relative king safety, and a half open b file.  Also black is often forced to commit a knight and a queen to defending f7 until they castle.  On the other hand white is down a pawn and could resign afte Bxb4 :)
