Today I played at the internal competition of chessclub Het Kasteel in Wijchen. I love to play sharp games and like to play Gambits. I know this is not a good opening, but at my level (below 1600) gambits can work. The Fried Liver can work as well. And it worked.... Fritz analyzed this game as well, but why should I play dxe5? (I am white)

What do you mean it's not a good opening?

For white it's great when black plays 5...Nxd5, you didn't play the best response (6.d4) Nxf7 is good but gives black a draw with correct play .

And even if your opponent dosen't play 5...Nxd5 you can get good positions as white.

Philosophically I am opposed to openings which cap your growth. This includes all trick gambits such as the Fried Liver.

I think it would be really cool to become an expert on the King's Gambit though. While there is a lot of theory, most people don't spend time on it (compare with the Sicilian where both white and black spend lots of time studying).

I found exactly one KG game that Spassky lost as white on chessgames.com.

Also, did you mean to post that question in one of the KG threads? Smile

That spassky game was a simul so it dosen't count, Spassky has never lost a King's gambit in tournament conditions with regular time controls, he might have lost some blitz and rapids though I don't know.
