Fritz 12 PGN file analysis

Sort:
phindex

Not sure if this is the appropiate place for this question, but I am finding it impossible to use Fritz 12 to analyze a PGN file.

Here are the steps I am taking:

1.  I click on the 'Database' button.  The Database window opens.

2. I click on the folder icon to open a file... and nothing happens at all.

Could someone who is using Fritz 12 to analyze their games please send assistance?

Thanks in advance.

I can't beleive no one has replied to this. I'm also having the same problem. (I also can't believe why Fritz makes such a simple task so difficult)

I gave up and uninstalled Fritz 12 about 24 hours after I posted that request.  Installed Chessmaster 10th edition, which may not be as powerful, but is at least usable.

Uhm select the game or games you want analyzed after you open the pgn in the database view and then go to tools and press full analysis.

Thanks AtahanT, but as I recall, I was unable to get past the 'open the pgn' step.

fritz 12 sucks basically in this regard.  Im not quite sure why they had to make that so counter intuitive.  I have no answer either, I have struggled for hours reading other posts about this and still can't create a new game (pgn) into a created database.  i understand that i will receive "youre an idiot" posts after this but still felt the need to express my frustration.

I appreciate you chiming in wilyslick, I consider myself proficient with a wide range of software, but in the end Fritz 12 defeated me.

No matter, if felt damn good to uninstall it.

Herzog1911

Steps are:

1. Start Fritz
2. Press F12 to open games list
3. Click File|Open|Database
4. Click the "File Type" drop down arrow and choose PGN
5. Locate your PGN file and open it

Thank you Herzog1911, hopefully anyone who has not already given up on the software will make use of your instructions.

I really hate this program... I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to blow 20 bucks on something that should work easily but does not. I have tried the simple instructions given by Herzog and it simply doesn't work.

I click f12 and it takes me to an empty database. Now logically speaking your next move would be to open a file and place it in this database. But there is no option to do that. There is no "File" command in my GUI. Although apparently some people have it because it shows it in the instruction booklet. So your stuck trying to create a new database for each and every file. What a ridiculous program...

I had a choice between Fritz 12 and Chessmaster 10... I wish I would have chosen Chessmaster...

I just can't for the life of me figure out why they would make it so hard to do one of the most basic and necessary functions of a chess program like opening up and analyzing a PGN file...

Do yourself a favor and avoid this program at all costs. *end rant*

Herzog seems to be talking about Fritz 11.  In Fritz 12, there is a little quadrangle just to the left of the grey and red can (Application Menu) in the top left hand corner.  You can use the quadrangle to open databases.

Up to Fritz 11, the interface had the standard File, Edit, View menus on a regular toolbar, but lately, new applications all seem to be imitating Microsoft Office's new ribbon menus.  I do like the Fritz 11 interface better than Fritz 12, but IMHO both programs are much more flexible and useful than Chessmaster once you get used to them.  Aquarium incidentally has an even more arcane menu structure than Fritz 12.

Feathered_serpent

I appreciate your help but I'm really trying to add games to my own database. It only seems to let me choose a game and then create a new database with that one game in it. Is there a way to open a database and then save a PGN game file so every time I open that database all those game will show up?

Nothing I've tried has worked so far...I must be missing something really obvious.

The only reason I have just given up on this program is the fact that it seems so good otherwise.

rigamagician

You don't have to open a database in order to save a game into it.  Just choose Save from the Application Menu, and then choose the database you want to save to.  Replace will save the current game to the currently open database.

Also, .cbh is the native format for Chessbase databases, so you might want to switch to that rather than using PGN.  Fritz can read and write PGN, but many of its features are only available for .cbh databases.

I never understood why people would want to get Fritz or Shredder when you can EASILY get HOUDINI 1.03a for FREE...

apparently.. Houdini 1.03a in its x64 Bit-8 Core Form, it has a higher rating than Rybka 4

Bugniduck

Yes, Houdini 1.03a is on top of the IPON Rating lists at the moment.  Rybka's claim to fame was winning the 10th ICC computer tournament.

There is "Open database" in Database section. It is the second of little icons up left.

I can open a database and open a game in the database, but if I save a game as a pgn or get sent a pgn then how do I open that?

I can't put it into a database to open it and I can't seem to open the game direct by searching for it?

jhbchess Why write something and then delete it?

Can you help?

plotinusUK

its not that hard once you know how:) click on the open button, then select open database, then when the box comes up change the drop down file type from .cbv to .pgn and import the game into Fritz
