I've been having some trouble with the birds opening as white. I think I play ok, but my light-squared bishop always dies a horrible death by entombment...
This is one of my recent games where just that happened, I managed to win, but only because my opponent blundered.
All constructive criticism is welcomed, please help me to be able to fix this! :)
ok this is kinda of about the bird but what it seems like to me is your trying to focus on a 'system' of attack so you can just set things up and have all the fun. this is flawed in its approach. The bird has its own set of problems that black can use to gain an active game (personally i like the fast g6 Bg7 lines)
I think you have had fun with the Bird and its time to move on to something more classical . play e4 or d4 and just have fun. if you want to keep more control then play the zukertort variation after 1d4
I understand what you mean, I want to have complete control of the game, but this why I decided to switch from 1. e4 to 1. f4, so all I would need to know is one system, so I could focus more on the middlegame.I didn't like having to react to what my opponent played.
I will take your advice into account, but I can't say I'll switch back to 1. e4 right away. Thank you for your input :)
Have you ever considered Bb5?
I hate the bird's opening I play the italian game more and end out winning many games
you are falling for a trap.... there is NO such thing as a universal system. You must adapt to varying approaches your opponent might come up with. One of the major problems with the bird is the approach is very easy to see coming. you have create a kingside weakness that has to be monitored and defended. Your likely plan of development is going to be after f4, b3, e3 and Ne5 blah blah blah,...
The problem is that you go on autopilot and you just put pieces on squares with out thinking. This is a very dangerous trend to start early on.
The bird is interesting to study but it will stagnate your growth just as any 'system' will. we as humans like 'easy' we want to grab onto a one size fits all type approach and are willing to deal with any short comings as acceptable. The issue is that the system also limits experiences to ONLY that system what happens when your system no longer works because your opponents have figured out a good response to 1. f4 that gives them chances to win equal to yours.
I have a theory that players who dont like x opening (those openigs that are considered sound and main lines not obscure side variations) is because they dont understand the ideas and therefor struggle with them and dont like them.
Play the bird for a bit explore the ideas but move on once you have figured out a good system for black. Dont play it and cross your fingers hoping black doesnt play that one annoying line (with a quick g6 and fiachetto (grin))
Be aware by reading what follows, that I have a very negative view of the Bird, and I'm not objective.
But on your comment on 16...Qh4 + "I didn't expect this" it seems clear that you are not enough aware of the weakening of the Kside. One playable reply to the Bird is 1...e5 (From's gambit) gambitting a pawn to hit strong and hard on this weakness (the idea is 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 and Qh5+ g3 Bxg3+ is already a threat). Although I play it, it seems unsound to me because White can hang to the pawn with (very) cautious play, but it requires White to switch completely his development plans - thus killing what most players want from the Bird, ie some easy attack plan.
In the game, 6.h3 (?) doesn't seem right (6.Be2 instead).
10.e4 ? is digging your bishop's grave. 10.exd4 was better, but maybe even better was keeping the tension with 10.Bg2.
11...Nb4 (?) right away leads nowhere after 12.Qf2 (and 13.a3). After (11...Bd6) 12.Nd2 Nb4 ! and the knight on d2 blocks the queen, forcing Qd1 (don't you think this square is inferior to f2 ?)
14.Ba3 (?) seems better to me than 14.c3 ? (because if your opponent had found the correct answer (14.c3) Nc6 the bishop is still facing a wall of pawns). But this is of course after having taken care of the Qh4+ problem, so 14.h4 or Kf2 (both are ugly, choose your evil).
17...Be7 ? is not powerful at all, it allows your bishop back in the game while giving a pawn. ...Bc7 and White keeps struggling.
After 23...Qc3 (?) (Qd4 !) 24.Rc1 Qd4 ! Black has still a huge advantage. He will win d3, and even if he doesn't mate or win material immediately, he will blockade the dark squares, probably put the knight on d4, and squeeze White with his additional piece (as the bishop is worthless, black is playing with one more knight).
+1 on irontigers post...
