30. a6 Rxg2+ 31. Kh1 Rg3 and it looks to me like h3 can't be held.

30. b6 is strong indeed. Black has to deal with the immediate threat of bxa7 followed by Qxb7 winning for white. And if black plays 30. ... a6 then the idea I gave for black is improved 31. Qxe3 and the f-pawn is pinned because now Rxf8 leads to mate.

I would say Qxe3 would be the best path.

Am3692, given that line and the b6 line were already given, why do you think Qxe3 is better than b6?

How about 1. R X e3.  If 1...f X e3 then 2. Q X c2. and if 2... Rf7 then  3. Qc8 is mateFrown

30. b6 Rxg2+ 31. Kh1 Rg7 32. Qxe3 and the f-pawn is pinned because fxe3 Rxf8+ Qd8 Rxd8#

30. Qxe3. That might hold for another 20 moves.

benws, thanks that's  been suggested twice before. Also, it seems that 30. b6 is an improvement on Qxe3 because of the immediate threat of bxa6+ and the fact that the b6 pawn creates a back rank mate threat.

Then you haven't been paying attention. It was already suggested and it gets checkmated immediately by Qf2+ followed by Qxg2#.
