I had not played in a tournament since 1974. But when the National Open came to Chicago in 1988, I thought I'd enter.
In the first round I had an easy assignment against a 1800 minus rated. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the Round 2 pairings that I was on board No. 5 against GM Dimitri Gurevich who was the highest ranking GM in Illinois at that time.
I did not expect to last long against a GM much more a Russian GM if I played 1.e4. So I chose the Botvinnik English.
I was surprised I was still alive by the time we reached the time control.
And when Gurevich offered me a draw I was elated.
I did well against a 1900 and then a 2200. But in the 5th round senior master Danny Kopec cut me down to size, winning in 31 moves against my Modern Defense (1.e4 g6) on board No. 13. I withdrew after the 5th round.
NOTE: THE YEAR (1987) ON THE DIAGRAM IS WRONG. IT SHOULD BE 1988. The game took place on 3/18/1988
Nice game! He had a nice attack going but you defended very well, and the end was pretty good too.
Mahalo Ruben!
Enjoy your vaction!
Very nice game! you should be proud of yourself :D
with this draw you shouldav gotten like FM or CM :D
and when i read ur title i thought u were demetrois18 becuase apparently he beats gms and hes 1700 rated
that was a excellent game
looked like your played very well
lol I also thought this would be demetrios I was expecting to find more crap merely claiming to be a game vs a GM.
In hindsight it was silly of me since for the mighty demetrios a draw vs a GM would not be something to boast about.
