I thought it was a good game, although you underestimated him several times I believe. Tough opponent.

If this is your first otb game then you did a good job keeping up with a 1700 rated player.  Other comments:  I don't like 8.Re1 if you were planning on playing d4 anyway because it simply loses all attempts at advantage, after 16... h6 did you at least consider Bxf6 when you can swap the game down to nothingness with an equal to slightly inferior position.  After 19... Nc5 you are in danger of being positionally squished, you should try to exchange off pieces even at the cost of a pawn to try to achieve a rook endgame or opposite colored bishops, this would have been your best chance.  The last thing I would mention is that your only hope rested in keeping the rook and knight on the board trying to stir up complications.  Maybe 34. Nd4 and if Bc7 then 35.Rc6 and 36.Nb5 keeping him tied up momentarily and keeping things from being clear. All in all good game though, just keep practicing and you will get better.  Good Luck

Good first game overall - I think you correctly spotted most of your mistakes.
