Hi, I'm not sure if this quite the correct forum to post this in. I'll let the mods figure that out.
I'm trying to find a pgn viewer for my ipad that will allow me to move the pieces around so that I can do some analysis myself and then return to the acutal game. I have downloaded a couple of free apps that work great but none seem to support this feature which to me seems like a sort of must have...
Come on my peeps...I know I'm not the only chess nerd out there...
Indeed, this is clearly not the good forum. 'chess books & equipment' looks much better. You can move it by editing your post.
And you should refrain double (triple) posting (see the 'edit' button ?) especially for such useful comments.
As for your question, the feature you are asking for is more than a basic PNG viewer would do, you are asking for something that allows you to edit your PNG (on a 'chess board' interface), not just reading it. This could make a difference (because such an editor needs to 'know' the rules of chess, while a reader would probably play 1.e2-e5 without seeing the problem).
I have Chessbase and Hiarcs and they both allow me to make moves and get back to my original position, but you cant add the new variations to the game as far as I can work out.
They are not free but very inexpensive and work well on the Ipad.
If you go to the Chessbase site online and look through the download section there are articles on the products.
Hope this helps.
Irontiger thanks for the tip on which forum to post in. Will investigate. Btw, I've been a member here (paid no less) for quite a while and I've learned that when you really want a response to thread the best way to do it is to "bump" the thread as I did because it brings it back up (albeit briefly) to the top of the thread list where people might actually see it. So while I appreciate your view on the ettiquete I will respectfully disagree with your advice there.
Sirness, I'll check those out. In actuallity the program wouldn't have to "know" the rules or how the pieces are allowed to move for what I'm looking for as mentioned by Irontiger because I'm not looking to save any edits or create PGN. I just want to be able to move pieces around so that I can look at variations without having to visualize endlessly or open up a real board or another program. In any case I'll check out those apps and see what the story is. Thanks again. :)

Maybe, but can you imagine if anyone did like you ? The threads would be impossible to read.
You had better post it right away in the good forum, and provide a relevant title (this part was ok) if you want a quick answer.
Don't you have anything better to do?
Hey, if you have an ipad or iphone, check out Christophe Theron's Chess app.
In my opinion, it is excellent for viewing and reviewing games. It allows you to import pgn games found on the web, and when you have loaded a game, you can step through it with recorder type buttons. More importantly, it allows you to make moves yourself. If you make the move that's next, in the pgn game, it will continue with the main line of that game. If you make a move outside of the main line, it registers a variation. You can go up to 20 variations deep, and at any time, return to the previous variation (or the main line if you only go one variation deep). Hope this helps.
BTW the app I mentioned is just about perfect for going through chess games in books. Although it doesn't store variations it lets you explore them and easily return to the game. I have hiarcs shredder and other chess apps but none of them can do this.
I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for as I would imagine you had figured this out already. But, just in case... If you just want a sort of board to analyze and you are not trying to save the analysis, the chess.com app does have a feature that pulls up an analysis board for your on-line games.
Now, if you're like me and you like Vote Chess, there is no such feature on the app but if you are on the website, you can hit the link that says "Analyze" and that will pull up an analysis board for that game.
Hope that helped.
The only difference is that Theron's app allows you to return to a variation from a sub-variation. Something that comes up over and over again in books. It makes reading a chess book (currently I'm reading Mcdonald's giants of strategy with it) smooth and seamless.
Thanks nunupal, I am now downloading the "lite" version and will check it out later tonight!
Viewing this on my computer I saw that the pro with coach version is on sale today. 99 cents!
Yup I just bought it and it works great. Problem solved. You the man!
