Hey all, recently got the shredder chess app on my iPhone, it was a bit pricey, but it seems pretty good. One thing it supposedly can do is measure your rating as you play, and adjust to create a similar strength opponent. It also tries to work out your Elo rating as you go.
Now if you have a quick glance over at my profile you can see I'm nowhere near as good as Shredder chess seems to think I am, but for some reason I beat it on a higher setting... I've put a couple of examples down here, for higher rated peeps to take a glance at. I'm sure I've made errors in these games (I always do!) but this means that shredder chess made larger ones? I basically want to know if I just got lucky a few times or if this chess engine is really predicting my rating too high...

Just looked at first game.  It played horribly.  No where near a 1672 rating.

I think the ELO is a bit optimistic.  I'm at like a 1350 on it and I'd be lucky to be playing like an 1150 right now...

Who cares what number it says though?  It's not as glitchy as glaurung.  It's a fun sparring partner and excellent for chess on the go.

I've got a bunch of chess engines.  Maybe the chess.com engine is stronger?

I've found that the Hiarcs app is a much tougher (more accurate?) judge of your rating than is Shredder.  tChess Pro just added the ability to evaluate and track a user rating as well, but I haven't used it enough to compare.

Interesting, I have the same program on my EDGE iPhone and it plays very strongly. I have mine set on the "aggressive" setting, makes things more interesting IMO.

I emailed the game development team sometime back. The rating system uses a n-400\800 variable. Meaning if you play it at elo2600 and you play poorly you will get an elo 1800-2200 rating depending on your version. It keeps adjusting shredders strength down until you beat it, giving you a much more accurate rating. Two and a half years later, the question remains: What's with Shredder?

I had tried the Lite version and dismissed it as crippleware. It is rated 1650 and I beat it easily every time. No surprise there; on a good day, I'm rated around 2000.

However, today I played the paid version for iPhone at the highest rating of 2600 and beat it on the first game. Does Shredder actually start lower and adjust? I played well but really did not feel like I was playing against 2600.

Here is the pgn:
