Where did I go wrong?

Sort:

So this is from a USCF tournament game from last year. I've been meaning to post it for some time, but never got around to it. It happened to be my first tournament loss (and my first tournament), the US National G/30, and I was fresh off my first ever win, against a kid from a rival school, no less.

I haven't really been able to figure out where I went wrong (my USCF rating's 873, so I'm not that good), so could someone please help me analyze?

you were too hungry lol. But sometimes trading off isn't the best idea, those pieces really help in the endgame especially bishops. You can always do mentor or tactics to become better, it will also help you make the best moves possible. In the endgame you can always just spite check, until you win on time or to avoid an impending checkmate.

Well, the main problem with your piece sac was that it left you a piece down (and btw I think you meant "wealth," not "dearth"). Smile

Well, I'm not sure if there are guidelines regarding adjectives going with "open files", so I settled on "dearth."

AndyClifton

Presumably you meant it gave your opponent's rooks lots of open files to use (a "wealth"), not very few of them (a "dearth").

Oh.

Right. Right. Thanks.

rival school???? what where? speaking of sound openings, the hyper accelerated dragon isn't considered that sound either. just making you feel better. kinda XD

And it also gave your opponent an extra piece.

shepi13

He had a wealth of pieces while you had a dearth of pieces.

@chesshma

BCS, Henry, BCS. Aren't they technically our rivals?

@shepi13

Well, for a while I technically had more pieces than my opponent (she was a girl, in case you wanted to know) since I traded a knight for two pawns. But then the whole thing kinda fell apart and yes, I was left with a dearth of pieces.

"Two is more than one, so I gladly traded my one knight for two pawns."

I'm sure you realize now this is a bad idea. It seems like you played it out of some kind of desperation. You were unhappy with the position you had and tried to do something radical to get things going. So, let's see how you got into such a pickle to begin with.

Never moving anything passed your own third rank in the first seven moves. Of course you are cramped an inflexible after this. You need to stake out territory for your army to move in.

In many cases, you don't look ahead more than what you're doing for one move (let alone what your opponent might do). For example, 8. Ng5 which you say yourself is pointless.

11. e4 "blocking everybody's bishops". This blocks your bishop, but it does not block your opponent's bishop, it gives your opponent a target that he is attacking.

13. Nb5 "freeing my fianchettoed bishop." Yes, but where is the knight going? Perhaps Nd1 then Ne3 would be better.

15. a3 "Keeping away the b pawn." What's the point of keeping away the b pawn? So what if it attacks the knight, you were trying to get the knight out of the way of the bishop anyhow, you'd be happy to move it.

I actually like the idea of "I have a greater number of pieces" it's lead me to look at some interesting sacrifices regardless of what the straight material count might suggest.  So IMO this is actually a good type of thought to have.

However in this thinking pawns aren't pieces.  And actually in chess terms too, pawns are not called pieces, they're just pawns.  So a knight for two pawns you actually have 1 less piece... but you're counting on the pawns you've stripped away give you some kind of benefit.  In this case you'd like to have some connected queenside passers to compensate, but you were never able to generate them, so it wasn't a good sac.

SHE GOES TO BCS WHAT??????????? WHEN I WAS (not) INVESTIGATING HER PREVIOUS TOURNAMENTS, I CAME UPON A RESULTS CHART THAT SAID SHE WENT TO PHOENIX SCHOOL OR SOMETHING...well it was in 2010, so kinda probably not updated...=_= yeah.

chesshma

WE NEED TO FIELD-TRIP (verb) TO BCS AND I MUST HAVE MY REVENGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

jhshi

No, the person I beat was from BCS. Read more carefully.
